"Gyorkus is a bad mutha..."

"Shut yo' mouth!" :)

Ah, this actually reminds me of the Tim Burton film version of Mars Attacks! from 1996. A decent movie, but ultimately the same issue described here. Namely, it's spoofing something that was never very serious and already pretty funny to begin with. I appreciate movies like this for their humorous qualities, but I always wondered if said humour was intentional or not. I think they were actually supposed to be taken seriously back in the day, but they're just so ridiculous that I can't see them as anything other than pure popcorn.

OMG, I used to love watching old blaxploitation movies on TV at like three in the morning when I was in university. It sucks that this movie didn't turn out good, but I can't say I'm surprised. I'm glad you watched it at home, because I had been picturing you as the only white person in the theatre at STC.

My favourite blaxploitation parody of all time is from the adult cartoon Venture Bros:

Jefferson: Yes, I only hunt Blackulas.
Fish Creature: Oh, so you only hunt African-American vampires.
Jefferson: No, sometimes I hunt British vampires. They don't have African-Americans in England.
Fish Creature: Oh yeah. Yeah, good point.
Jefferson: So I hunt Blackulas.
Fish Creature: I was just trying to be...
Jefferson: Man I specialize in hunting black vampires, I don't what the PC name for that is.

It's not just you. I'm firmly on the "Hollywood has run out of ideas" bandwagon, and not getting off any time soon. :) Part of the blame is the recent deluge of terrible horror remakes with zero original ideas whatsoever. Another part is the Karate Kid remake with Jackie Chan. Just...why? A bigger part was the announcement that they're working on a remake of Total Recall too. Let me guess; this time the chick will have four boobs instead? And they'll be CG too, I bet.

It's gotten to the point where when I hear that there's a remake of something, I avoid it like the plague. What the hell is the point? A lot of the charm of something like Total Recall was in its cheesiness. I can just imagine a gritty, realistic take on it that would be made today. Booooooring!

Then you have something like Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes which is so totally different from the original. Now that's kind of good; at least you're injecting some originality into it. But on the other hand, now you're not remaking anything. You're just making a whole different movie and riding on the coattails of name recognition.

So in conclusion, fuck the remakes. Scott Pilgrim had issues, but it was a hell of a lot more interesting than another remake.

Yes, I don't mean to say that most gamers are actually aware of these things. I just wanted to underscore the need for such political organizations for representation, even if the consumers themselves don't care. The ECA essentially cares for you. Obviously, you may not agree with everything they say, but if that's the case then it's simply up to you to become more informed and involved with the process. The friends I mentioned are exactly what I was talking about when I said it's not about how many games you play or for how long; it's about how you think about them.

You're right, it does seem odd that I don't have my own blog. I started one once, but I only managed to put two entries in it. I thought it would be random rants about game stuff, but I find that I don't get worked up enough for a massive post like that with the kind of regularity required to keep it going. I thought about doing kind of a "rant of the week" thing and started compiling ideas about stuff to rant about. Not even game-specific; films too. Mostly games though. Plus, I don't know that it's anything other people haven't already said anyway. I think I'm more of the mindset of "who would want to read my stuff besides me?" Okay, maybe Shayla would.

I think the point you more vividly make is that anyone who will write a 1500-word essay on video game politics in someone's comment box accurately fits the label "gamer."
